Mary's Story
Life
I was raised in a small town of 3,000 just outside of Baytown. My childhood was neat, with forts and the woods, streams, the pond, going camping, Church on Wednesday nites and Sundays, vacation bible school, lots of baseball and marbles and dolls, puppies, climbing trees, the swingon vines, the treehouse, kites, walking to school, hide and seek, and bicycling with friends. I went to a rather classic elementary school and was in the band in Jr High. I was lucky enough to move to Deer Park School District (Lynchburg)for h.s. from Baytown, where I met many new friends. My friends are all very special as well as my bros and sisses-- John, David, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Theresa- all DPHS alumni. Went to college(where I met my hubby robbie) then UH Then UH College of Pharmacy. Worked in Retail Management and sometimes practiced pharmacy in my stores. When my kids were out of HS, Rob and I moved to Europe(England) then Asia for many years, where we thought we died and went to heaven-esp.Thailand. Life and hard work has been very good to us. Aging parents brought us back, but we are now enjoying our family, and trying to figure how we want to spend our future here. Each day is a blessing and the gifts you give really do come back to you. more later May God Bless you, Mary
School
Looking back, I was too serious at school and at work. I would have worked less and partied more. I still have many good friends from H/S. My girlfriends were great, I still love you Linda, Brenda, Tina, and bless her heart Connie. My Deer Park HS education was a great boost in College, but I didn't learn I was good in sports until I got to college. and got on the Raquetteball team, then intramurals in softball and raquetball. I would have been more involved in sports.
College
I was accepted to U of H & College of Pharmacy on the Science Dept Scholarship from another college and majored in Pharmacy. I took a little Industrial Technology as well sometimes as much as 22? hrs per semester between the two..Thanks to Dean Forester and Dean Buckley letting me arrange my exams and finals around each other. I must have been hyper or something..and why?? with 2 kids and a job??? I'd still rather be a carpenter or in House building, but think I made a pretty good R.Ph. and Retail Manager and business problem solver .. I love my profession. After all also, how many pharmacists can change an industrial bandsaw blade (tricky and keep your limbs) or cut a dovetail or rabeted mitre.. in oak.. on a tablesaw without burning the wood finish?(for the ind. techies out there)
Workplace
As far back as I can remember,I have always worked. As a child, my brother and I took "coke" bottles back to the store for a deposit return for our neighbors and a cut of the amount.Back then people left the bottles on the back porch, so all we had to do was pick up the wood cases and put on our wagon, go to the store turn in the bottles...Expand for more
, and return the empty cases and money without our share to the back porch of our neighbor. We got about 25c for every dollar to spend at Million Brothers five and dime on the nw side of the railroad track in Highlands. For a nickel I could buy a plastic doll bottle with real rubber nipple,a yoyo for a dime or a top for 15c.When I was older I started helping mother iron my dad's clothes.Back then we boiled Faultless starch on the stove in a big pot, dipped the clean kackie pants & white dress shirts in the hot liquid, pulled it out with a stick and put it in the sink until you could carry it out to hang up to dry. Bluing was added to the starch before we dipped the white shirts to make sure they looked brilliant. When the clothes were dry,We took a coke bottle, filled it with water, put an aluminum and cork sprinkle top in it, and sprinkled the clothes all over. Then we put them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until ready to iron. Ironing took hours But I enjoyed it and my mom was relieved to have the help. Before long I was ironing clothes for our neighbor for 25c a shirt and 50c for pants.I tried my hand at babysitting but the Culpepper's six kids broke me of that.I worked at L & L Frosty for 10 hours a day -50c an hour- on Saturdays when I was 14 which was no big deal for kids back then. .We knew the Lambrights and the Longs so they paid me cash.Hard job for a kid but I loved the challenge and appreciated it .At 15 I went to work at Big Chief Pharmacy, washing and waxing the store shelves (we didn't just dust back then).Soon I was a pharmacy tech, inventory clerk-we ordered direct from the manufacturers back then, bookkeeper, banker and just about everything else for the pharmacy. The owner taught me everything he could about management. The summer after I graduated highschool, the owner went off to Captain his shrimp boat for the summer and left me to manage.I took care of all the business and wrote his dividend checks at the end of each month.I didn't even realize the tremendous responsibility I had at the time.In Sept I started college, worked 8 to 4:30 and went to school 5:20 to 9:50 daily except Frid. Then Univ Hous,, Pharmacy College.I worked part time in 2 more pharmacies(more on that later)until I graduated, then went to work for a company I dearly loved-as a manager for 9 years. I met some amazing people . received the company's highest pharnacist accolade companywide, and management awards , in the Houston Market to #1 in Sales increases and Profits over the next 5 years. Did some fun contract work for myself. Later, My job became that of being any ex-pat wife in Europe, Singapore, Thailand, & I have worked & lived well, taking on some interesting professional tasks[advertising mgr magazine in my friend's long absence, hospital distribution systems, etc. along the way. Returning to the states a few years ago I began a new job of grandmother.God has truly blessed me.
